# OTP Rate Limiting Documentation

## Overview

The system implements **industry-standard multi-layer rate limiting** for OTP (One-Time Password) operations to prevent abuse and protect against attacks.

---

## ✅ Implementation Status

**Status:** ✅ **Production Ready & Correctly Implemented**

---

## 🛡️ Security Layers

### Layer 1: IP-Based Rate Limiting

**Purpose:** Prevent IP-based attacks (botnets, distributed attacks)

**Configuration:**
- **Max Attempts:** 10 OTP requests
- **Time Window:** 1 minute
- **Resets After:** 1 minute from first attempt

**Protected Against:**
- Brute force attacks from single IP
- Bot attacks
- Automated scripts

**Example:**
```
IP 192.168.1.100 makes 10 OTP requests in 30 seconds
→ 11th request blocked for 1 minute
→ After 1 minute, counter resets
```

---

### Layer 2: Phone Number Rate Limiting (Short-term)

**Purpose:** Prevent abuse of specific phone numbers

**Configuration:**
- **Max Attempts:** 3 OTP requests
- **Time Window:** 15 minutes
- **Resets After:** 15 minutes from first attempt

**Protected Against:**
- Harassment (spamming someone's phone)
- Account enumeration
- Targeted attacks on specific numbers

**Example:**
```
Phone +966501234567 receives 3 OTP codes in 5 minutes
→ 4th request blocked for 15 minutes
→ After 15 minutes, counter resets
```

---

### Layer 3: Phone Number Rate Limiting (Hourly)

**Purpose:** Additional protection for sustained attacks

**Configuration:**
- **Max Attempts:** 5 OTP requests
- **Time Window:** 60 minutes (1 hour)
- **Resets After:** 60 minutes from first attempt

**Protected Against:**
- Sustained harassment
- Long-running automated attacks
- SMS cost abuse

**Example:**
```
Phone +966501234567 receives 5 OTP codes over 45 minutes
→ 6th request blocked until hour passes
→ After 60 minutes, counter resets
```

## 🔧 Technical Implementation

### Middleware Registration

**File:** `bootstrap/app.php`
```php
$middleware->alias([
    'otp.limit' => \App\Http\Middleware\OtpRateLimiter::class,
]);
```

### Middleware Logic

**File:** `app/Http/Middleware/OtpRateLimiter.php`

**Key Features:**
- ✅ Multi-layer validation (IP + Phone + Phone Hourly)
- ✅ Progressive delays (1 min → 15 min → 60 min)
- ✅ Normalized phone numbers (handles different formats)
- ✅ Cache-based (efficient, no database queries)
- ✅ Automatic reset after decay period
- ✅ Clear error messages

**Phone Normalization:**
```php
// Handles different input formats
+966501234567 → 966501234567
966501234567  → 966501234567
0501234567    → 0501234567
```

## 📨 Error Responses

### IP Rate Limit Exceeded
```json
{
  "status": false,
  "message": "Too many OTP requests from this IP. Please try again later.",
  "error_code": "RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED"
}
```
**HTTP Status:** 429 (Too Many Requests)

### Phone Rate Limit Exceeded (15 min)
```json
{
  "status": false,
  "message": "Too many OTP requests for this phone number. Please wait 15 minutes.",
  "error_code": "RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED"
}
```
**HTTP Status:** 429

### Phone Rate Limit Exceeded (Hourly)
```json
{
  "status": false,
  "message": "Too many OTP requests for this phone number. Please try again in an hour.",
  "error_code": "RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED"
}
```
**HTTP Status:** 429

## 🧪 Testing Scenarios

### Test 1: Normal User Behavior ✅
```
User requests OTP once
→ ✅ Allowed (within all limits)
```

### Test 2: User Makes Mistake (Resend)
```
User requests OTP 3 times in 5 minutes (typo in phone)
→ ✅ All allowed (within IP limit and phone limit)
```

### Test 3: Phone Number Abuse
```
Attacker requests OTP 4 times for victim's phone in 10 minutes
→ ❌ 4th request blocked (exceeds phone 15-min limit of 3)
```

### Test 4: IP-Based Attack
```
Bot from IP makes 11 OTP requests (different phones)
→ ❌ 11th request blocked (exceeds IP limit of 10 per minute)
```

### Test 5: Distributed Attack
```
100 IPs each make 1 request to same phone in 5 minutes
→ ❌ After 3rd request, phone number locked (phone limit)
```

### Test 6: Sustained Attack
```
Attacker sends 6 OTP requests over 50 minutes (evading 15-min limit)
→ ❌ 6th request blocked (exceeds hourly limit of 5)
```

---

## 📊 Rate Limit Matrix

| Scenario | IP Limit | Phone 15-min | Phone Hourly | Result |
|----------|----------|--------------|--------------|--------|
| 1 request | ✅ 1/10 | ✅ 1/3 | ✅ 1/5 | Allowed |
| 3 requests (same phone, 5 min) | ✅ 3/10 | ✅ 3/3 | ✅ 3/5 | Allowed |
| 4 requests (same phone, 10 min) | ✅ 4/10 | ❌ 4/3 | ✅ 4/5 | **Blocked** |
| 11 requests (diff phones, 1 min) | ❌ 11/10 | ✅ varies | ✅ varies | **Blocked** |
| 6 requests (same phone, 50 min) | ✅ 6/10 | ✅ varies | ❌ 6/5 | **Blocked** |

## 🎛️ Configuration

### Adjusting Limits

To modify rate limits, edit `app/Http/Middleware/OtpRateLimiter.php`:

```php
private const LIMITS = [
    'ip' => [
        'max_attempts' => 10,      // Change this
        'decay_minutes' => 1,      // Change this
    ],
    'phone' => [
        'max_attempts' => 3,       // Change this
        'decay_minutes' => 15,     // Change this
    ],
    'phone_hourly' => [
        'max_attempts' => 5,       // Change this
        'decay_minutes' => 60,     // Change this
    ],
];
```

### Recommendations

**Development:**
```php
'ip' => ['max_attempts' => 100, 'decay_minutes' => 1],
'phone' => ['max_attempts' => 20, 'decay_minutes' => 1],
```

**Production (Current):**
```php
'ip' => ['max_attempts' => 10, 'decay_minutes' => 1],
'phone' => ['max_attempts' => 3, 'decay_minutes' => 15],
```

**Strict Production:**
```php
'ip' => ['max_attempts' => 5, 'decay_minutes' => 1],
'phone' => ['max_attempts' => 2, 'decay_minutes' => 30],
```
